Iwas beginning to get tired. The power flowing through me kept me going longer than I thought I’d be able to, but it wasn’t going to work forever. I still wasn’t able to do anything but fight, so I did just that, hoping that someone, anyone, would come help me. Despite his wild exertion, it didn’t look like Arell was going to wear out anytime soon.

Finally, finally, after I thought I was going to be done and dead any moment, a bright sword flashed at my side, slamming into Arell’s chest.

Xera was there beside me, breathing hard but with anger in her eyes, directed solely at Arell. She’d cut through his armor, but only the smallest amount. Still, her sword had done what I couldn’t.

Arell retreated, flying back away from us, and I suddenly understood why he’d been pressing me so hard the entire time.

Now that he wasn’t in my face, I was free to launch a truly stupid amount of arrows into him. I could fire a few each second as time slowed down, and while they didn’t penetrate his armor, he couldn’t really do anything while taking their constant impacts.

He tried to circle around, vary his height and his attacks. He feinted and dodged, twisted and looped in the air, but each time he got close, Xera was there, parrying his attacks or, on a few occasions, cutting into his armor again.

All the while, I just kept it up, sending an endless volley into him. I barely even tried to aim. Just hit him vaguely in the center. It was good enough.

To his credit, he never once looked like he was going to give up. He just kept coming, again and again, trying more and more reckless attacks.

Right up until Viluna leapt up behind him and smashed her hammer into his back.

He crumpled and dropped out of the air like a rock, crashing into the ground and gracelessly rolling across the stone.

Viluna was on him in a second, slamming her hammer down over and over while I kept pelting him all the while.

I thought it was over. I thought he was dead and there was no way out.

His armor cracked, bright, glowing light spilling out. What none of us realized was that this was a last, desperate attack. It exploded outward, shining bits of gilded metal and a burning rush of Celestial magic assaulting us all.

I shield all three of us, of course, while mentally patting myself on the back for it.

We were thrown back, and once the light died down, I could see a bare-chested Arell retreating into the sky, looking back down at me with naked hatred.

I just watched him go and thought, Well, next time, you bastard.

On the ground, in between bits of torn and bent metal, there was a gold and white cube sitting there with a soft, likely magical, glow. I had no idea what to make of it and it wasn’t the time, so I pocketed the thing and refocused on what we were doing.
